The Data Intensive Research Initiative of South Africa (DIRISA), a programme of the South African National Research Network (SANReN), proudly hosted the 7th Annual National Research Data Workshop at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria from 02 to 03 July 2025. The workshop once again served as a vital platform for advancing the country’s research data management and open science agenda.
In a first for the African continent, the CSIR, in collaboration with clinicians from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, has developed an innovative ex vivo drug sensitivity testing platform.
In a landmark moment for continental space development, the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa programme, which is the flagship Earth Observation (EO) initiative, has officially become an initiative under the African Space Agency (AfSA). This strategic integration marks a new chapter in Africa’s journey towards harnessing space science and technology for sustainable development, environmental resilience and policy innovation.
On Thursday, 26 June 2025, in a proud moment for South Africa, youth representatives from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) took centre stage at the G20 Ministerial Youth Outreach Programme 2025. The CSIR mechanical testing laboratory is uniquely positioned to support the mining industry with its testing and inspection services. Established as the Government Mechanical Laboratory by the Department of Mines in 1935, the laboratory offers 90 years of experience in superior testing facilities, targeted at safety in critical lifting and hoisting equipment, as well as support for mine products in South Africa’s deep and ultra-deep underground mines.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) co-hosts the preparatory school for Network for Zero-defect and Zero-waste Digital Manufacturing for Electric Vehicles' Components (NeDMEV) in collaboration with Nelson Mandela University (NMU) today at the CSIR Pretoria campus.
From 17 to 18 June 2025, the CSIR, which anchors the Marine and Coastal Operations for Southern Africa (MarCOSIO) project under the auspices of the GMES and Africa, co-hosted the Southern African Regional Stakeholder Workshop at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, South Africa.
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in collaboration with DIPLOMICS, will be hosting a four-day workshop at the CSIR Scientia, located on the Pretoria campus in the Proteomics laboratory. This workshop aims to provide attendees with an interactive learning experience, enabling participants to consult with facilitators about their projects and maximise the value of their data.
