Mhlanga’s research interest focuses on the development of a geographic information system for transport planning and decision support.

Mhlanga is a transport economist in the transport systems and operations research group. He played a key role in projects to develop an integrated freight logistics plan and a freight flow model for the Durban-Free State-Gauteng corridor. Mhlanga has also worked on the development of an integrated public transport network within metropolitan cities in South Africa. This work includes the investigation, assessment and analysis of various business models for each city to improve the socioeconomic impact, as well as financial viability of public transport projects across the country.
