Passive radar, also known as Passive Coherent Location, is a sensor that uses third-party illuminators – such as public frequency modulation (FM) broadcast – to illuminate a target of interest. It locates and tracks the target by processing the reflected signals of the target.
The CSIR has developed an optical imaging system for the detection of small and medium to large shots from a firearm. The system detects the Potassium signature produced by a chemical reaction or
combustion of the propellant inside a firearm.
The CSIR has developed a multi-purpose modular pod that can be integrated with a fast jet aircraft for a variety of uses in training, test and evolution, as well as prototype payload development.
The CSIR, in partnership with Dragonfly Aerospace and Space Commercial Services, is developing the technology for a C-band, phased-array, synthetic aperture radar as payload for a LEO satellite. The development has been funded by the Department of Science and Innovation up to this point.
