Risenga Chauke
Risenga Chauke’s research interests focus on passenger transport, transport planning, transport economics, transport safety and railway engineering. Chauke is also interested in understanding travel behaviour using stated preference techniques, which was the subject of his Master’s degree dissertation and was named the Best Paper by a Young Professional at the Southern African Transport Conference 1999.

Chauke joined the CSIR in 2022 and holds an MSc in civil engineering from the University of Cape Town. He has over 20 years of experience in track maintenance, train operations, highways and public transport planning and modelling, as well as economic appraisal of transport schemes. Chauke started his career with Metrorail (South Africa) before moving to the United Kingdom where he worked on numerous interesting projects such as the Cross London Rail project (now called the Elizabeth Line, which is part of the London Underground network). One of the exciting projects he worked on was the demand modelling for the winning London 2012 Olympic Bid. Chauke is also a qualified high school mathematics teacher.
