The CSIR assists the South African National Defence Force with a range of technology development or customisation services based on the requirements of their operational tasks. These tasks are often characterised by the need for short turnaround times. Solutions could range from power supply in remote areas, protection against wild animals, camouflage and clothing, waste management or operational command and control capabilities for deployed troops. The services include design, modelling and simulation, pilot or prototype building (or 3D printing) in workshops as well as field trials and testing.
