To meet its mandate of improving the quality of life of South Africans, the CSIR relies on its most important asset, its people. The CSIR’s multidisciplinary nature positions the organisation to help solve the increasingly complex problems of our time. This multidisciplinary science, engineering and technology base is made up of individuals who are highly specialised in their respective fields. They are geneticists, virologists, software developers, polymer chemists, applied mathematicians and industrial engineers, just to name a few.

Peta de Jager is a registered professional architect and functional building infrastructure impact area manager in the Smart Places Cluster at the CSIR. Peta holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master’s degree in Applied Ethics for Professionals from the University of Witwatersrand. Her research interests include health and the built environment, engineering and design approaches to infection transmission and mitigation, climate responsive design, implementation support to government and capacity development.
Prof. Godfrey’s research interests include the circular economy as a development opportunity for Africa.
Debba’s research interests focus on statistical and remote sensing applications. He is also managing a group of researchers whose primary focus is spatial planning and the development of advanced systems.
Oelofse’s research interests include the institutional and legal framework within which waste is managed in South Africa, waste information and data, re-use of industrial waste streams, reducing the environmental impacts of waste, food waste and South Africa’s transition to a circular economy.
