To meet its mandate of improving the quality of life of South Africans, the CSIR relies on its most important asset, its people. This multidisciplinary science, engineering and technology base is made up of individuals who are highly specialised in their respective fields. They are geneticists, virologists, software developers, polymer chemists, applied mathematicians and industrial engineers, just to name a few.

Van Reenen’s research interests are in indoor environment quality with a focus on acoustics, particularly in healthcare and education settings, the design and maintenance of healthcare facilities, and green building design application.
Newman’s research interests lie in the definition of baseline concentrations for metals in sediment in southern African coastal waters and assessing water and sediment quality in ports.
Musvoto’s research interests include regenerative food systems, sustainable development, global environmental change and its implications for African agriculture, environmental implications of agricultural land use and the role of agriculture in a green economy.
Dr Russo’s research is dedicated to evaluating the sustainable utilisation of resources for the collective benefit and enhancing existing practices to make them more sustainable.
