Dr Ilse Kotzee
Dr Kotzee’s research interests lie in assessing ecosystem service conditions, understanding social ecological processes, and developing improved systems approaches to flood regulation services to inform integrated flood management.
Full Profile
She joined the CSIR in 2010 as a research intern and started a PhD studentship in 2011. She was permanently employed as a researcher in 2016 and plays a leading role in the modelling of ecosystem services and assessing social-ecological systems. This area of expertise relies on observations, models, and assessment techniques applied at a landscape scale to a variety of biophysical and socio-economic datasets.
Her most recent work entails spatial delineation of the supply and demand relating to flood regulation services in productive landscapes and the delineation of key green infrastructure that supports and underpins a number of key ecosystem services in urban areas - specifically flood avoidance. Dr Kotzee also formed part of a project team that worked on The Green Book, an online planning support tool that provides quantitative scientific evidence on the likely impacts that climate change and urbanisation will have on South Africa’s cities and towns.
