As the world increasingly looks to young leaders to shape tomorrow’s solutions, #TeamCSIR youth are not just ready, they are already leading the way!

On Thursday, 26 June 2025, in a proud moment for South Africa, youth representatives from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) took centre stage at the G20 Ministerial Youth Outreach Programme 2025. The event, hosted by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation in collaboration with the National Youth Development Agency, was held at the University of Limpopo under the theme: “Advancing inclusive growth for young people through science, technology and innovation.”

Representing the CSIR, Koketso Makaleng joined over 200 young leaders from across South Africa and Africa, engaging in thought leadership, exhibitions and solution-oriented dialogue. Discussions centred on advancing inclusive science and innovation policies, with key topics including grassroots entrepreneurship, digital literacy, student funding and career development.

The CSIR youth delegation proudly showcased cutting-edge research and community-driven projects that directly address unemployment, education disparities and digital inclusion.

Among the distinguished speakers were Dr Blade Nzimande, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, who encouraged young people to adopt a scientific approach to solving societal challenges, and Bongiwe Moni from the Human Sciences Research Council, who emphasised the importance of mentorship and soft skills in youth advancement.

The insights and contributions from the CSIR youth will directly inform South Africa’s participation in the Y20 Summit 2025, marking a historic milestone in the country’s G20 Presidency.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Koketso Makaleng, a student researcher from the Network Systems Application impact areas, said:  “This platform gave us the opportunity not only to share our work but to influence real change through science and innovation. We are raising the flag not just for the CSIR, but for the future of youth-led progress in Africa.”

Koketso Makaleng presented the Spectrum Switch technology, which includes several telecommunication instruments such as the Spectrum Analyser and various antennas. He educated learners about his career journey and provided guidance on the process of applying for the CSIR bursary programmes – including recommended career paths, funding opportunities and entry-level requirements at the CSIR.

By actively participating in this landmark event, CSIR youth not only represented South Africa on a global stage, but also embodied the EPIC values, along with resilience, creativity and leadership that defines the country’s future. Their contributions will feed into the broader Y20 Summit 2025, as part of South Africa’s historic G20 Presidency.
