The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will be showcasing its Biomanufacturing, Agroprocessing and Health Innovation technologies at the inaugural Bio Africa Convention, taking place at the Durban International Convention Centre from 26 to 28 August 2019.

The event brings together major biotech stakeholders, including researchers, innovators, inventors and policy-makers from around the globe.

As Africa’s largest science council with strong capabilities in biomanufacturing technologies, Agroprocessing and Health Innovation, the CSIR’s top science researchers will be contributing to the discussions with a key focus on indigenous knowledge-based nutraceuticals and health beverages, diagnostics, integrated biorefineries-bioprocessing technologies and exploring funding opportunities in global markets: donors and venture funders.

“The CSIR is a key player in the biotech sector and our participation in this convention is critical. It is an opportunity for our scientists to showcase the CSIR’s diverse value offerings in the health, agriculture and industrial biotechnology sector. We are also looking forward to engaging with local, regional and international stakeholders. We hope that the engagements will attract and enhance collaboration opportunities,” says Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela, CSIR NextGen Health, Advanced Agriculture and Food and Chemicals Executive Manager.

Technology processes such as biopharming, biocatalysis, bioprocessing and valorisation of indigenous foods are among some of the strongest capabilities that the CSIR will be showcasing at the conference.

With the convention’s key focus on Africa’s capabilities, the CSIR will also exhibit its NEPAD Southern African Network for Biosciences programme. This initiative is a shared biosciences research, development and innovation platform working collaboratively to address some of Southern Africa’s key biosciences issues in health, nutrition and health-related intervention areas, such as agriculture and the environment.
