Only a handful of people in South Africa have mastered Stem Cell reprogramming and Dimakatso Gumede (34) is one of them. As a CSIR candidate researcher of the bioengineering and integrated genomics research group, she works on creating disease models of the innate immune system to study unique African gene variants that lead to elite controllers that naturally control viral load levels without antiretroviral therapy.
CSIR C3 aims to enhance the institute's efforts to catalyse the re-industrialisation of South Africa by establishing new technology-based enterprises and providing value to various stakeholders. The ultimate aim of the enterprise is to grow the South African economy in line with the country's Decadal Plan on Science, Technology and Innovation.
CSIR Biomanufacturing Industry Development Centre (BIDC): Call for Expression of Interest (EoI)
The EoI call is targeted at entrepreneurs and SMMEs entering the biomanufacturing sector to grow and expand biomanufacturing capacity to meet market demands. Read more...
In a first for Africa, the CSIR and biotechnology company Sawubona Mycelium have produced 800 litres of liquid cultivated mushrooms called Enokitake for bio-based cosmetic products.
The CSIR assisted Sawubona Mycelium, a small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME), to scale up the production of high-value products from the mycelium of Enokitake using liquid-cultivation method. The company is bringing the global mushroom ingredients mega-trend to South Africa with the help of the CSIR Biomanufacturing Industrial Development Centre (BIDC).
Whether it’s drain-cleaner bugs, fungal proteins or home-grown probiotics, the entrepreneur is just as crucial to a burgeoning biomanufacturing business as the product.
Scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) were able to operate three Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) measurement simultaneously in the same location.
The CSIR has developed a robust system to rapidly detect deformation of land surfaces. This is particularly useful in mined areas, where early detection of deformation is pivotal.
The study considered the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events, which impact on coal supply to power stations.
The BIDC is a CSIR initiative, in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and BioPark @ Gauteng (The Innovation Hub) would like to support Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) in the bio-manufacturing sector, with the aim of creating or expanding bio-manufacturing activity and associated job creation. CSIR and BioPark will partner to deliver a full package to SMMEs, as part of the mentorship programme.
The DSI-CSIR Photonics Prototyping Facility (PPF) invites expressions of interest (EOIs) from small, medium and micro enterprises, established private companies, and higher education institutions.
