Transport Evolution Africa Forum

The transport sector impacts our lives in several ways. To highlight its latest innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing the entire transport value chain, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) played an active role at the Transport Evolution Africa Forum and Expo.

The annual gathering took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, from 20 to 22 September 2023, with the CSIR participating in spearheading innovative solutions to address transportation challenges. This marked the eleventh forum where local and international public and private stakeholders convened to strategise developing and maintaining Africa’s ports, rail and road infrastructure.

During his presentation, Dr Richmore Dondofema, senior researcher at the CSIR,
emphasised the importance of becoming savvy in logistics.

Through its participation in the event, the CSIR played a significant role in fostering collaborations to shape the future of mobility on the continent, serving as a gold sponsor. Engaging in conversations about the future of transportation while offering unique services and solutions were CSIR senior engineer Dr Thomas Roos, senior researcher Dr Richmore Dondofema and senior engineer Sarel Haasbroek, all of whom were featured speakers at the event.

Each of their presentations was featured in themed conference sessions that focused on sustainable road and rail operations for the future, collaboration and resilience in supply chains, and port performance for economic growth, respectively. They unpacked some of the CSIR’s strategic interventions aimed at revolutionising transport. These interventions included exploring the prospects for a hydrogen economy in Africa to decarbonise economic sectors, implementing integrated transport and logistics solutions and utilising innovative decision tools for safer and more efficient port operations.

During this three-day event, the CSIR seized the opportunity to share its contributions in the realm of smart mobility and sustainability within Africa’s transport sector.  Delegates at the event gained exclusive strategic insights, explored potential collaboration opportunities and engaged in discussions about the distinctive resources and capabilities that the CSIR brings to the dynamic field of intelligent mobility.
