On Friday, 3 May 2024, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will be hosting a technical tour at its Coastal and Hydraulics laboratory in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The technical tour is one of the many activities that will take place during the 35th PIANC World Congress, themed "Future Ready Waterborne Transport – Unlocking Africa.” The event is scheduled to take place in Cape Town from 29 April to 3 May 2024. This global gathering of ports and coastal engineers and professionals in this sector provides an invaluable platform for the CSIR to showcase its pioneering advancements in the domain of waterborne transport.

The CSIR coastal and hydraulics laboratory is the largest facility of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Here, CSIR engineers and scientists build small-scale versions of planned coastal infrastructure and its surrounding area. The coastal processes and wave conditions are then simulated to test the performance of the planned port infrastructure and the unintended impact such structures may have on the surrounding coastline and coastal processes. The impact of future climate change can also be tested in these physical models.

Within the walls of the laboratory lie an array of equipment and spaces that enable CSIR specialists to undertake specialised and in-depth 3D studies on wave agitation, breakwater stability and moored ship response. CSIR researchers will showcase a holistic collection of port and coastal engineering innovations during the tour.
