The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) congratulates the Chairperson of its Board, Prof. Thokozani Majozi, for being awarded the National Order of Mapungubwe.

This is the highest honour in South Africa, granted by the President of the country, and it recognises South Africans who have accomplished excellence and exceptional achievement in international research areas that have benefitted the country.

Prof. Majozi received the bronze award for his outstanding contribution to science, particularly the development of a novel mathematical technique for near-zero-effluent batch chemical facilities that enables the re-use of wastewater.

The award was conferred on him by President Cyril Ramaphosa at an event held in Pretoria this morning, Thursday, 25 April 2019.

“Being honoured with an award of this magnitude is one of the most humbling experiences. As scientists, our daily effort merely stems from our predilection for new knowledge, and not necessarily from pursuit of any recognition. Consequently, to be recognised for the work we do should only be a blessing and affirmation that our work has positively impacted others. As a nation, we need to continue coming up with fundamental and innovative solutions to challenges facing our people.” says Prof. Majozi.

Prof. Majozi, who is a professor at the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at Wits University, has been the Chairperson of the CSIR Board since 2015. The CSIR Board was instrumental in driving the development of the new CSIR strategy, which came into effect on 1 April 2019. The new strategy is built around the vision of accelerating socioeconomic prosperity in South Africa through leading innovation. It sets out how the organisation will leverage its strong science, engineering and technology capabilities to build on industrial development opportunities to ultimately create a more balanced focus on scientific and industrial research.

The Chief Executive Officer of the CSIR, Dr Thulani Dlamini, said the organisation is proud to have a Board Chairperson of Prof. Majozi’s caliber. “We congratulate Prof. Majozi on receiving such a prestigious award. We are proud and happy that his dedication and hard work to improving the quality of life of the people of South Africa is being recognised through this award,” says Dr Dlamini.
