Workshop on advancing 5G in South Africa

Over the past few years, Fifth Generation (5G) networks have been deployed in various parts of the world, including South Africa. While there are promised benefits to 5G technology, it is also associated with potential risks. Therefore, harnessing the full potential of 5G technology requires a clear and pragmatic strategy.

On Friday, 13 October 2023, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) will be hosting a Brainstorming Workshop. This workshop aims to bring together stakeholders from diverse industries, academia and research institutions to deliberate on various strategic aspects of 5G and emerging technologies. The workshop, entitled ‘RSA strategy for 5G and emerging technologies’, stems from a partnership between the CSIR and ICASA with the goal of launching a project designed to create comprehensive recommendations for South Africa's strategy on 5G and emerging technologies.

The workshop will provide various stakeholders with a platform to reflect on the lessons learnt, the successes achieved so far, the challenges faced and the path forward for the implementation of 5G and emerging technologies in South Africa. The workshop will be structured into breakout sessions, with each session focusing on specific themes, including Next Generation Regulations, 5G verticals and use cases, emerging technologies and Cybersecurity.
